“Diminishing Returns” [video] Many farmers in North Central Sri Lanka have begun cultivating tobacco as an alternative crop on (rice) paddy farming lands. This has led to environmental degradation and diminished soil fertility, causing other crop yields to be lower. However, despite such long term problems, many farms continue to cultivate tobacco because initial yields are profitable, and tobacco companies provide loans and initial support for farmers. Produced by the Organization for Visual Progression, 2010
