US-based Alliance One International and Universal Leaf through pre-arranged contracts purchase leaf for Philip Morris, British American Tobacco and other cigarette manufacturers. Leaf buying companies seek to push prices per kilogram of tobacco leaf down to cut costs, pushing farmers and farm workers deeper into poverty in Malawi and other tobacco growing developing countries.
